About Torres Alegre
Torres Alegre is a well-known family winery owned by legendary winemaker Victor Torres Alegre, located in Baja California's Valle de Guadalupe. With a PhD in oenology from the University of Bordeaux and over 30 years of winemaking experience, Victor Torres Alegre is one of the founding fathers of modern Mexican wine production.
At Torres Alegre, winemaking is taken seriously with 100% of the harvest and sorting of the grapes all happening by hand, taking advantage of passive energy. Wine is produced either in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels.
The Torres Alegre lineup starts with Del Viko, affordable and youthful wines, named after Victor's youngest son, Viko. Next up are the La Llave blends, which were the first to be produced in the early days of the winery, as a blend between New World and Old World styles. The cream of the crop are the single varietal Cru Garage wines, with each varietal representing the unique terroir of the Valle de Guadalupe. Each Cru Garage wine is a limited production of 2000 bottles or less and is released after it has been aged for 24 months.
Meet Victor Torres Alegre
Victor Torres Alegre was born in Mexico City in 1949 and studied agro engineering at the Universidad Autonoma de Chapingo, followed by a PhD in oenology from the University of Bordeaux. In his doctoral thesis, he researched the impact of fermentation temperatures on the quality of white wine, based on the relationship between fatty acids and aromatic esters during fermentation. His thesis demonstrated for the first time that the best white wines are made at a temperature of 18°C or 64°F.
Prior to realizing his personal dream of opening his own winery, he worked for some of Mexico's best-known wineries, obtaining many international awards. Together with his family, he takes pride in running a boutique, family-owned winery that produces wines of the highest quality.
